We've been having a great time writing this half term. Our book about Philippe Petit, The Man who walked across the Towers, has really captivated our imagination. We actually found it difficult to believe that it is actually a true story! We have written letters and diary entries. We set up the classroom as The New York Times Office and worked as reporters for the day interviewing eye witnesses. Finally, we have been journalists and written newspaper reports.
Year 5 had a great time at the beach school in Fylde, although the weather couldn't have been much worse! We learned a lot about ocean pollution and how it is everyone's responsibility to take care of our environment and our oceans.
Hello and welcome to Year 5's page.
I'm Mrs Hill, the teacher for Year 5.
This is a really important year, when we work hard to secure key skills before the move in to Year 6. The more we can secure this year, the easier next year becomes.
This means that reading regularly at home is an absolute must, as the texts that we share in class will become increasingly difficult, and the more familiar your child is with tackling harder vocabulary and the more fluently he/she can read, the easier all learning in class will become.
It is hoped that by now your child call recall all times and divide tables facts to 12. If this isn't the case, it's definitely something to focus on at home this term. If he/she is able to recall these facts instantly, there are many other facts to learn! Your child has access to fact sheets in class that can also be copied for use at home.
We've got off to a great start in Year 5, tackling learning head on with enthusiasm!
Science
We've started our science topic all about space and enjoyed making mobiles of the different planets in the solar system and their position in relation to the sun.
English
In English, we are reading a great book: ..... We will be using ideas from the text to help us develop our writing, focusing on setting descriptions and character descriptions before writing our own adventure story extracts.
